NUCRYST Pharmaceuticals appoints
Katherine J. Turner, Ph.D. Vice President of Research
WAKEFIELD, Massachusetts, June 13 2006 – NUCRYST Pharmaceuticals Corp. (NASDAQ: NCST; TSX: NCS) is pleased to announce that Katherine J. Turner, Ph.D. has been appointed Vice President of Research.
Based at NUCRYST’s headquarters in Wakefield, Massachusetts, Dr. Turner will be responsible for leading NUCRYST’s pharmaceutical research and will report to Paul J. Schechter, M.D., Ph.D., Vice President, Drug Development and Regulatory Affairs and Chief Medical Officer.
“Dr. Turner is an accomplished scientist and biotechnology executive and brings to NUCRYST valuable experience in discovering and developing successful therapeutic agents in a variety of areas,” said Scott H. Gillis, President and CEO of NUCRYST. “Her research leadership will serve NUCRYST well as we progress our proprietary nanotechnology platform and explore ways of expanding our pipeline of pharmaceutical products.”
Most recently Dr. Turner served as Vice President, Validation Biology at Biogen Idec Inc., where she directed research in immunology, neurobiology, fibrosis and oncology. Prior to this, she rose through positions of increasing responsibilities at Genetics Institute and its successor, Wyeth, to Vice President, Immunology and Hemostasis.
Dr. Turner earned a B.Sc. with honors at the University of Sussex, U.K. and an M.S. and Ph.D. in Biochemistry at Virginia Tech. In addition, she carried out post-doctoral research at Brandeis University and London University. She has published extensively in peer-reviewed journals, authored chapters in textbooks and presented research findings at symposia and professional meetings.
